The old town around Main Street and the subdivisions spreading west off 501 need almost nothing in common from a roof.
Conway is the county seat and the oldest part of Horry County, and its housing splits neatly in two. Downtown and along the Waccamaw you have homes built well before 1950 under an enormous live oak canopy — steep older framing, original decking, and constant leaf and moss load in the valleys. Out toward Highway 501 you have subdivisions built in the last twenty years that are all reaching the end of their first roof at once.
Being this far inland helps with salt but not with water. Conway sits on the Waccamaw River, and this town remembers what Florence did in 2018. When we work here we pay closer attention to drainage than we do at the beach — gutter capacity, downspout routing, and whether a roof is shedding into a yard that already struggles to take it.
